Further Maths A Level

Curriculum Intent

All students to believe they are capable of achieving high standards and becoming competent and resilient mathematicians.

Why should I study Further Maths?

Further Mathematics is a challenging qualification, which both extends and deepens your knowledge and understanding beyond the standard A Level.

For someone who enjoys mathematics, it provides a challenge and a chance to explore more sophisticated mathematical concepts. As well as learning new areas of pure mathematics, you will study further applications of mathematics in mechanics and decision mathematics.

This is a Russell Group universities facilitating subject.

What skills will I gain?

The reason why so many employers highly value a mathematics qualification is mathematics students become better at thinking logically and analytically.

Through solving problems, you develop resilience and are able to think creatively and strategically. The writing of structured solutions, proof and justification of results help you formulate reasoned arguments. You will have excellent numeracy skills and the ability to process and interpret data.

For most Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) degree courses, AS or A Level Further Mathematics is often a preferred subject.

What career paths is Further Maths suitable for?

Further Mathematics qualifications are highly regarded and are warmly welcomed by both employers and universities.

Students who take Further Mathematics demonstrate a strong commitment to their studies and it makes the transition from sixth form to mathematically rich university courses much easier.

If you are planning a career in areas such as Engineering, Sciences, Computing, Finance/Economics etc. you will benefit enormously, though having a Further Mathematics qualification identifies you as having excellent analytical skills, whatever career you are considering. Careers for those with good mathematics skills are not only well paid, but they are also often interesting and rewarding.
